A Chat with Maryam Berijanian: PhD Candidate, Inventor, and Multi-Award-Winning Researcher in Generative AI, Computer Vision, and Natural Language Processing

This week, Stephen Ibaraki has an exclusive interview with Maryam Berijanian.

Maryam BerijanianMaryam Berijanian is a PhD candidate in Computational Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (CMSE) at Michigan State University (MSU), working under the mentorship of Dr. Dirk Colbry. Her research encompasses Deep Learning, Generative AI, Computer Vision, and Natural Language Processing (NLP), with a particular focus on Large Language Models (LLMs).

Maryam earned two Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Tehran, Iran, graduating among the top students in both disciplines. She received her Master of Science in Systems and Control from the University of Twente, Netherlands, specializing in robotics and applying machine learning algorithms for medical robotics and mechatronics applications.

Her academic and professional journey includes substantial research and teaching roles at RWTH Aachen University in Germany, where she contributed to innovative methods in medical image synthesis and railway infrastructure monitoring. At MSU, she serves as a teaching assistant, instructing courses in parallel computing, computational modeling, and data analysis.

Maryam's accomplishments include multiple scholarly publications and active participation in research projects spanning artificial intelligence and its real-world applications. During her time at RWTH Aachen University, she also contributed to two invention disclosures focused on machine learning approaches for railway infrastructure monitoring and played a key role in securing research funding from Germany's Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMDV).

Her commitment and excellence have been recognized with numerous prestigious awards, including the Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award, Engineering Distinguished Scholar Fellowship at MSU, and honors from IEEE and O'Reilly Media. Maryam actively mentors graduate and undergraduate students, fostering collaboration and advancing research initiatives in artificial intelligence.

Maryam Berijanian continues to explore cutting-edge AI technologies, driven by a passion for innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration.
