Podcast/Video Interviews by Stephen Ibaraki

A Chat with Luis Oala: Head of Machine Learning at Dotphoton; co-chair of the Data and AI Solution Assessment Methods working group at the UN ITU/WHO; co-authored technical standards such as the Good practices for health applications of machine learning

This week, Stephen Ibaraki has an exclusive interview with Luis Oala.

Luis OalaLuis is Head of Machine Learning at Dotphoton and concurrently completing his PhD at the Department of Artificial Intelligence of Wojciech Samek at Fraunhofer HHI in Berlin, Germany. His work focuses on data optimality, uncertainty quantification, and robustness in machine learning systems. Together with his collaborators, he develops methods, processes, and tools to identify failure modes in machine learning systems and enhance their performance for reliable real-world application through real and synthetic data.

Luis serves as the co-chair of the Data and AI Solution Assessment Methods working group at the UN ITU/WHO and co-authored technical standards such as the Good practices for health applications of machine learning. There he led the implementation of health.aiaudit.org, an international platform for data and model quality assessment hosted on UN commissioned AWS structure. Additionally, he co-developed a data-centric library and data management system for optical data in machine learning at raw2logit. Luis has presented his work at various events including ICML UDL, NeurIPS ML4H, ICLR Robust ML, BVM, SAIL, ACM CHIL, NeurIPS Physics and ML, and ITU/WHO on AI for Health meetings.

As an organizer, Luis regularly co-chairs international machine learning conferences including Machine Learning for Health 2022 (USA) & 2021 (virtual), ICML 2023 Data-Centric Machine Learning Research Workshop (USA), Indaba 2022 Trustworthy AI Workshop (Tunisia), ICLR 2023 Practical Machine Learning for Developing Countries (PML4DC) Workshop (Rwanda), the ITU AI for Good series, as well as ITU/WHO meetings in Brazil, Zanzibar, India, Germany and USA; attracting speakers including Ben Recht, Emmanuel Candes, Hima Lakkaraju, Marzyeh Ghassemi, Mihaela van der Schaar, Uri Shalit, Yoshua Bengio, or Zack Lipton, among others.
