Dr. Vassil Dimitrov: Scientist; Researcher; Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Calgary

This week, Stephen Ibaraki has an exclusive interview with Dr. Vassil Dimitrov.

Dr. Vassil Dimitrov obtained his PhD degree in applied mathematics in 1995 from the Mathematical Institute of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. He spent two years (1996-1997) as a Postdoctoral fellow at the VLSI Lab, University of Windsor, Canada. This allowed him to accumulate a great experience working with hardware engineers.

Dr. Dimitrov worked as a Chief Computer Scientist at the Reliable Software Technology in 1998 and as a Senior Researcher at the Nokia Research Centre in 1999. In those two capacities he had a chance to investigate various cryptographic algorithms and started pioneering work in the area of low power image compression algorithms. Since 2001 he has been a Professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Calgary. He is conducting research work in the domains of hardware cryptography, image and signal processing, matrix computations, computational number theory, and, over the last few years - on implementation of hardware accelerators for machine learning applications. He is an avid chess player and runner.
